Thu, 01 May 2008 11:53:00 PDT
I’ve been doing a bit of networking lately, and have received some fascinating feedback as a result: “I occasionally read your blog to catch up, and rarely understand a word you say; but you sound very, very smart.” “I’ve seen your blog, and it’s quite a collection of ‘bright and shiny things’ you talk about.” “I went through your paper, and it’s very, very technical. Who’s your audience?” These comments have given me pause,

New kind of beetle found! By CBC staff! Staff on the state-owned CBC Newsworld, where, suspiciously like Fox News Channel’s O’Reilly Factor, “The Spin Stops Here”! Most other people, like the folks at the National Post, which features the little bugger on their front page today, call it the Mountain Pine Beetle. Labcoats call it Dendroctonus Ponderosae. Bu

TTC Workers and the Right to Strike

Mon, 28 Apr 2008 12:52:48 PDT
The way the mainstream media has told the story, all is well in Toronto in the aftermath of the passage of legislation in the Ontario Legislature ordering the employees of the Toronto Transit Commission back to work. The subways, buses and streetcars are running and that's all that matters. Something is very wrong with this picture. Fundamental issues are at stake here and they cut right to the heart of our democracy. The right of workers to withdraw their labour in pursuit of improved

Global warming may 'stop', scientists predict

Thu, 01 May 2008 07:20:47 PDT
Telegraph: Global warming may 'stop', scientists predict Global warming will stop until at least 2015 because of natural variations in the climate, scientists have said. Researchers studying long-term changes in sea temperatures said they now expect a "lull" for up to a decade while natural variations in climate cancel out the increases caused by man-made greenhouse gas emissions. The average temperature of the sea around Europe and North America is expected to cool slightly over the decade

Gladiator Sandals: The inevitable post

Thu, 01 May 2008 06:22:35 PDT
Some 2000 and odd years ago, an otherwise civilized Roman Empire would get the same kick out of gladiator fights that we now get, say, from watching professional football: As you can see from this ancient mosaic, gladiator footwear was serious business, complete with over-the-knee plates to protect the precious shins. Those shin-plates have been underrepresented in the long and glorious tradition of classical paintings, which more often than not depict sturdy, beefed-up warriors wearing the

Albert Hofmann the inventor of drug LSD has died aged 102

Register,
UK

Discoverer of LSD dead at 102

Swiss chemist Albert Hofmann, who in 1943 accidentally discovered the
hallucinogenic effects of Lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD), has died at the age
of 102, Reuters reports.

Hoffman passed away at his home in Basel on 29 April as a result of a heart
attack, according to the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies.

The chemist had in the late 1930s been working on possible medical
applications of alkaloid derivatives of the fungus ergot and subsequently
synthesised a number of such derivatives, including LSD. It wasn't until 1943,
however, when a small amount accidentally leaked onto his hand that the
compound's mind-blowing capability was revealed.

Hoffman recounted a "remarkable restlessness, combined with slight
dizziness", elaborating: "At home I lay down and sank into a not unpleasant
intoxication-like condition, characterised by an extremely stimulated
imagination.

"In a dreamlike state, with eyes closed (I found the daylight too
unpleasantly glaring), I perceived an uninterrupted stream of fantastic
pictures, extraordinary shapes with intense, kaleidoscopic play of colours.
After some two hours this condition faded away."

The rest is history. While the CIA infamously experimented with the
mind-control possibilities of LSD during the 1950s and 60s in its Project
MK-ULTRA, it was Timothy Leary and his "turn on, tune in, drop out" mantra who
popularised the substance among the hippy movement and brought it to the
attention of the wider world.

Hoffman maintained the movement had "hijacked" the drug and insisted he'd
produced it "as a medicine and not as a substance to be abused". He continued to
defend its possible use "in analysis of how the mind works, hoping it could be
used to recognise and treat illnesses like schizophrenia", long after it was
banned in the 1960s.
